Part-Time Nursery Assistant: Water
Job Description
We are Plant Delights Nursery/Juniper Level Botanic Garden, a perennial plant nursery established in Raleigh in 1988, offering unique, rare, well grown, and properly named perennials to passionate gardeners around the world. We have one of the most extensive perennial trialing programs in the country. Our concern goes far beyond selling plants!
Despite being best known as a nursery, we exist for our work as a private 28-acre botanical garden and plant research facility focusing on ex-situ plant conservation, plant exploration, breeding, and propagation. We are a family-owned company with a mission to support research, education, and the exploration of plants through the sales of unique perennial plants.
Our nursery and garden provide an opportunity to work indoors and outdoors year-round, so we have a casual dress code, a diverse staff, and a friendly working environment.
Candidates must be physically durable, have a tolerance for a wide range of outdoor weather, have a good work ethic, a friendly personality, and be able to work well with others. Candidates must also be able to pay acute attention to detail while working at a fast pace.
Duties:
The Nursery Assistant: water, is responsible for watering, fertilization, and pH treatments as directed by the Lead Grower and Nursery Manager of Plant Delights Nursery. This is a detail-oriented position that requires good communication and task prioritization skills. The position requires a thorough understanding of a wide range of containerized plant culture.
This is a part-time position, up to 30 hours per week. Weekend work is required, according to the needs of the watering schedule of the nursery.
Green House Watering
*Maintain plant health with detailed attention to watering levels of different crops. Water levels will follow the 1-5 levels as taught by Nursery Management and will be expected to change during seasonal shifts.
*Maintain and clean the irrigation filters for Greenhouses on a bi-weekly schedule.
*Replace faulty irrigation sprinkler heads when needed, informing the Lead Grower when faults are noted
Crop Fertilization and pH treatments
*Following the direction of the lead grower, watering will coincide with fertilization treatments under the mixture specifications and use of the dosatron
*During the nursery wide fertilization period, the grower assistant will join the nursery team for fertilization applications of CRF formulas
*Recognition of necrotic crops and reporting of declining crops directly to the Lead Grower
*Repotting Plants that are over 1 year old with clearance from the Lead Grower
Nursery Maintenance
*The assistance of installing and removing Greenhouse covers
*The assistance in yearly cleaning of the Greenhouse floors
*The assistance of cutbacks and crop cleaning (old leaves, dead material, etc.)
Compensation: Starting at $12.00 per hour
Employee Classification: Permanent part-time hourly
Standard Business Hours: Monday – Friday 8 am – 5 pm, regularly scheduled to work less than 30 hours per week.
